Eight coaches arrived early on Thursday to begin preparation for the State Meeting Campout which was a fund raiser for the American Diabetes Association. The group began setting up for a weekend of movies and fun with a 50's drive in theme.
The other two coaches arrived on Friday and soon everyone began pitching in to help. After setting up the tables and movie theater area, the group worked hard to prepare 100 breakfast burritos for the Saturday morning breakfast. They were quickly assembled just in time for the whole state club to begin gathering for the evening social. There were about 28 total coaches in attendance for the weekend. After the social, the movies and popcorn started.
Saturday morning, the burritos and apples were a big hit. After breakfast, the meetings were held. After the state group meeting, Ted Boyette introduced Jan Makela- a speaker from the American Diabetes Association. He gave us a presentation all about diabetes and how prevalent it is. He offered tips and ideas to help those who may become diabetic and those who already are there. He held a question and answer period that was quite informative and had some handouts to read.
To help raise money for the cause, the group held a weekend drive in movies and popcorn and sold hot dogs and drinks for donations. The group enjoyed watching 3-d movies with glasses and several other films throughout Friday and Saturday. After expenses, the group was proud to have raised $441.26 for the cause.
For the evening dinner, it was "Your Mother's Favorite Recipe". Each club decorated their table with the 50's theme and served their mothers favorite recipes. There were six tables set up, one for each club. Everyone made their way around the different tables to eat. The ladies from the Dogwoods all dressed up in poodle skirts for the occasion. Mary Wright was gracious enough to spend the time to hand-make skirts for all the gals and head up the food committee. It was a hoot! Everyone enjoyed the dinner and afterwards, there were more movies to watch. We even picked up two new recruits from Powhatan, the Meeks, who joined us for dinner. Unfortunatly, our newest members, the Grays, had to leave due to a death in the family.
Sunday morning, the Dogwoods served more burritos, and sugar free angel food cake with strawberries and sugar-free cool whip.
Everyone enjoyed the diabetic-friendly breakfast. After breakfast, the Dogwoods held their club meeting and cleaned up. Everyone said their goodbyes.
The next campout will be held at Pocahontas State Park on Father's Day weekend.
I personally want to thank each and every one of you for all of your help for a very successful fundraiser and state meeting. We could not have done it without you.
