This was a busy weekend for the Dogwoods. This was the state meeting, last campout of the season, and a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. After a lot of planning, the club really worked hard to pull everything together to make it a fun and exciting weekend.
A few coaches arrived Thursday to get an early start on Friday. The management at American Heritage was working hard to get the kitchen ready for us to use in time, and redesigning the meeting room to fit everyone. By the time social hour started at 3:30, they were packing up their tools. The whole state gathered for the social, and the Peninsula Winnies celebrated their 30th anniversary cake with everyone.
After the social, the Dogwoods got busy decorating and putting together 100 breakfast burritos for the next morning. Breakfast was at 8 and the burritos were a big hit. After breakfast, the various state meetings were held, followed by the general state meeting. At the state meeting, Mary Wright invited her grandson, Timmy Lyons, who is stricken with Cystic Fibrosis, and Mike Schuler introduced him to everyone at the meeting. Tim explained the disease to everyone and described how he has to live each day of his life with such difficulties. Everyone in the room was moved. After the meeting, the room turned into a carnival of games, food and a silent auction to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Many simply wrote out checks. By the time it was said and done, we raised over $1,000 for the cause!! Thanks to everyone one who worked so hard, and those who contributed so generously.
Dinner was potluck with a twist. Each club was asked to prepare a "share the harvest" table with hearty soups and stews, enough to feed their club plus some. Each table was decorated with the harvest theme and set up with the food. There were six tables set up around the room which was great, no waiting in line for food. And there was plenty of it. Each table was awarded a prize for decoration, taste, number of soups and so forth. After dinner, the leftover pies were auctioned off for the cause.
Sunday morning there was a bagel breakfast followed by hymns and a devotional. Since it was veterans day weekend, some of the members gave talks about the first hand experiences with the Fischer house.
After breakfast, everyone packed up in the rain and said their good byes until the spring.
